Not built by a big company
Meet the siblings who designed, tested, and vibecoded this whole app as a summer project — and why they built it in the first place.

โ๏ธ [How did Neer and Alaina come up with the idea for PaperTrade? What gave them the spark?]
This was a summer project — Neer's for 5th grade, Alaina's for 9th grade — to vibecode a real trading platform, just for kids. The goal was to build a free app that gives a near-real-world experience of how stocks actually work: how to make decisions about when to buy or sell, and how to react when the market goes up, down, or sideways — all without any real money on the line.
Private leaderboards with friends or family — invite-only, never public.

PaperTrade is a simulated ("paper") trading platform created solely to help people — especially kids and teens — learn how investing works, in a risk-free environment. It is not a real brokerage, does not execute real trades, and does not hold, transfer, or manage real money or real securities of any kind.
All "cash," account balances, and dollar-like figures shown in PaperTrade are a fictional currency called Ferrobits (ฦ), named after WASP-76 b, a real exoplanet famous for literally raining molten iron. Ferrobits have no real-world monetary value whatsoever. They cannot be redeemed, exchanged, withdrawn, transferred, gifted, or converted into U.S. dollars, any other real-world currency, cryptocurrency, goods, or services, under any circumstances. Your Ferrobits balance is simply a score for practicing investing skills.
Nothing on PaperTrade — including stock prices, company descriptions, AI-generated summaries, "risks," "historical context," "questions to consider," news articles, or any other content — is investment, financial, tax, or legal advice, and none of it should be relied upon when making real-world financial decisions. Before investing real money, please talk to a licensed financial advisor and do your own research.
PaperTrade displays publicly available market data (such as stock prices, company names, and business descriptions) for educational purposes only. PaperTrade is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of the companies whose stocks, names, or logos may appear on this platform. All trademarks, company names, and logos belong to their respective owners. Market data may be delayed, incomplete, simulated, or inaccurate, and PaperTrade makes no guarantee about its accuracy or timeliness.
If you are under 18, please review PaperTrade with a parent or guardian before creating an account. By creating an account, you (or your parent/guardian, on your behalf) confirm that you understand this is a learning tool, not a real trading or brokerage service.
PaperTrade is provided "as is," with no warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, PaperTrade and its creator are not responsible for any losses, damages, or claims arising from your use of this platform, including any confusion about the nature of Ferrobits or reliance on any content shown here.
These terms may be updated from time to time. Continuing to use PaperTrade after changes are posted means you accept the updated terms.
An email address (used to sign in and to send account-related emails), a password (stored as an irreversible hash, never in plain text), and your practice trading activity -- trades, holdings, watchlist, and your fictional Ferrobits balance. At signup we ask your age only to confirm you're 13 or older; we record that you passed that check, not the age or a birthdate. We also log IP addresses and basic browser/device information (not precise location or anything that identifies your specific device) at signup and at each login, for security purposes -- blocking abusive login attempts, spotting bot/fake-account signups, and detecting a sign-in to your account from somewhere you haven't signed in from before (which we'll email you about, in case it wasn't you). Login-attempt entries are automatically deleted after a few months (see "How long we keep it" below).
To run your account: signing you in, sending verification and password-reset emails, and saving your practice-trading activity. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it to anyone.
PaperTrade uses two first-party cookies: one that keeps you signed in, and one that helps protect against cross-site request forgery. Neither is used for tracking or advertising, and we don't use any third-party tracking or analytics cookies.
Three services, all used only to make the app work:
Resend delivers our verification and password-reset emails, and receives your email address plus that email's content to do so.
OpenRouter generates the simplified, kid-friendly stock summaries you see on a stock's detail page. It only ever receives a public company business description (the kind of text found in any company's public filings) -- never your personal or account data.
Sentry tells us when something breaks, by receiving technical error reports (what code failed and why) when the app hits a bug. It's configured not to include your IP address, cookies, or any personal data in those reports.
For as long as your account exists. If you sign up but never click the verification link, that signup is automatically deleted after 24 hours. Deleting your account (My Account → Delete Account) immediately and permanently removes your trades, holdings, watchlist, and balance. Note that the database is backed up daily and backups are kept for 14 days, so a deleted account's data may still exist in a backup snapshot until it ages out naturally.
You can update your email or password, download a copy of everything we hold on your account, or permanently delete your account and all its data, at any time from the My Account menu -- no need to contact us for any of that.
PaperTrade is built with teenagers in mind and requires you to confirm you're 13 or older to sign up. We intentionally collect no birthdate and no more personal information than described above.
This policy may be updated from time to time. Continuing to use PaperTrade after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.

Successful sign-ins to your account. If anything here doesn't look like you, change your password right away.
Anyone with this link can see a read-only snapshot -- your total gain/loss, lessons completed, and how many trades you've made. It never shows your email, password, or a trade-by-trade history.
This account signs in with Google -- confirm with Google before setting a password.
Prices can move between now and when you confirm -- your order fills at the latest price, which may differ slightly.
This permanently deletes your account, portfolio, trade history, and watchlist. This cannot be undone.
This account signs in with Google, so confirm with Google instead of a password.
Upload a transaction/activity history CSV exported directly from Robinhood, Fidelity, Schwab, E*TRADE, or Webull -- we auto-detect the format and skip dividends/transfers/other non-trade rows automatically. No need to reformat anything.
To keep this portfolio in sync over time, just re-download and re-upload the same export periodically -- transactions already imported are automatically skipped, so only new trades get added.
Prefer to format it yourself? Plain CSV columns also work: date, symbol, side, qty, price
(date as YYYY-MM-DD, side as BUY or SELL) --
e.g. 2025-03-14,AAPL,BUY,10,182.50.
Either way, these are merged into your existing portfolio (average cost is recalculated), and your cash balance is left untouched since these are historical trades, not new ones.
